Do you want to learn English?

Every year, students from all over the world come to AUT to gain the English skills they need to prosper in education and work.

Our courses are for people who come from non-English speaking backgrounds and want to study in New Zealand.

Good English skills will:

  • allow you to study academic courses in New Zealand
  • give you confidence in speaking and writing English
  • help you to get work in New Zealand

If you are a beginner with English or more advanced, AUT has the study options that can help you improve quickly.

Preparing for university study

AUT offers an Academic English pathway for those who do not have English as their first language:

You can choose to progress to the Diploma in English Language after sucessfully completing the first semester of the Certificate in English for Academic Study or begin a degree or other diploma.

Employment skills English

If you want to improve your English skills to work in New Zealand, the Certificate in Employment Skills English is designed to help you communicate confidently in work settings.

Which classes are right for me?

When you apply at the School of Language and Culture, we will test your English and suggest a class that suits you best.

If you need to improve your English before you study your degree you can study full-time.

Depending on your current skill with English, you may need to some courses to prepare for the Certificate in English for Academic Study.

These courses are taught in 5 levels and make up the Certificate in English Language.

Grants for refugees

If you are a refugee it may be possible to get a grant to pay for your fees. When you contact us please ask about this.
