About the Centre for Creative Writing

Since its inception in 2008 the Centre for Creative Writing has developed a reputation for fostering excellence in prose narrative and has hosted some of Auckland’s most prominent writers and tertiary-based creative writing teachers.

As with similar programmes worldwide, we recognise that any category of writing – not just 'high literature' but biography, travel writing, children's stories, narrative journalism, even academic writing – can be creative.

We encourage excellence in traditional literary genres but also in the full range of contemporary popular genres.

Educational and professional support for authors

The Centre for Creative Writing shares its premises with the national office of the NZ Society of Authors, the premier society representing writers in New Zealand.

The Society lobbies on behalf of New Zealand authors in a variety of forums, and engages in an extensive programme of educational and professional development initiatives for writers.

It also runs mentoring programmes for new writers, and has a portfolio of prizes and awards aimed at encouraging start-out writers to develop.

The Centre is available at a nominal fee for book launches, media release and other literary/creative arts functions.
