Bachelor of Tourism Studies

Environmental Studies major

Tourists are attracted to unique and pristine environments, but tourism has a direct impact on natural environments. Ecotourism is already big business in places like Costa Rica, Kenya and New Zealand. Tourism businesses around the world are switching to more sustainable practices to minimise their impact on flora, fauna and the local culture.

The Environmental Studies major in the Bachelor of Tourism Studies (BTS) degree focuses on connections between tourism activities and the environment. You develop a solid grounding in ecological principles of marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, and environmental resource management.

  • Focus on sustainable tourism and ecotourism, and minimising the impact of tourism on the environment
  • Only university degree in tourism studies in Auckland
  • Work-integrated learning with opportunities for co-op, internships and work placements
  • Academic staff with strong tourism industry experience from around the world
  • Research expertise includes coastal and marine tourism, ecotourism and nature-based tourism, wilderness and wildlife tourism, sustainable tourism, and environmental impacts of tourism and recreation
  • Strong industry links with airlines, travel agencies, tour operators and other tourism industry organisations
  • Close ties to AUT’s New Zealand Tourism Research Institute
