MICHAEL KUHN

 Bachelor of Tourism Studies

Co-op leads to full time job

M_Kuhn1Getting hands-on industry experience was a big drawcard for Michael Kuhn when it came to choosing where to study his Bachelor of Tourism Studies.

"My favourite part out of the whole university experience was the co-op semester.

"Not many other universities allow you to work in the industry and gain course credit at the same time. AUT was the only university in Auckland offering the Bachelor of Tourism Studies with a hospitality major."

Michael also says the location of the university, right in the middle of Auckland’s CBD, was convenient to everything, and the size of classes provided a more personal learning experience.

"The classes are quite small and you feel that you get more face-to-face time with the lecturers. And since AUT is relatively new, many of the facilities are new and modern, such as computers."

Following his degree, Michael landed an overseas placement working as a tour guide at Disney World, Florida - an experience he describes as "great fun".

After 6 months, he returned to Auckland to work as a public transport service assistant for Auckland Transport.

"I did my co-op for ARTA and was fortunate that they hired me back the following summer. I now work on the operations of services and infrastructure, roadworks and events.

"It’s a lot of fun – I‘m always out and about. Public transport and tourism go hand in hand with each other, and my degree definitely helped me to land my job.

"While employers like looking for people with experience, having a relevant degree helps a lot too!"
