Juggling study, family and work - no problem at AUTAmira Fathimath juggles looking after her children, working and studying for her PhD at AUT University and says she couldn’t manage it anywhere else.
Originally from the Maldives, Amira applied to study for her PhD at a couple of universities.
Her topic is sustainable competiveness in tourist areas. The New Zealand Tourism Research Institute at AUT, where Amira had applied to do postgraduate study, suggested she start with a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in tourism.
“This was the best thing I could have done,” says Amira, who has completed her MPhil and is beggining field work for her PhD.
“It bridged a gap for me and most definitely set me up to better do my PhD. I wouldn’t have the confidence I have now if it wasn’t for my initial masters study with NZTRI.”
As soon as Amira completed her masters she was already talking about starting on her PhD.
“NZTRI has been extremely supportive of me and that support was the reason I chose to do my postgraduate study at AUT,” she says. I was on my own in a new country trying to settle in with children, but I’ve been very satisfied with AUT.”
Amira’s PhD will focus on the tourist community of Matakana (about 50 minutes north of Auckland). She says sustainability is a big issue for everyone in tourism and the industry is constantly striving towards sustainability. But competitiveness is a key factor in tourism as well as that is what keeps you in the game she says.
“These two go together to maintain a position in the international market.”
