Research Summary:

My research interests are diverse but I am primarily interested in applied research projects that have tangible and practical benefits. I am particularly attracted to pursuing research outcomes that focus on informing wise decision making for policy makers, managers and industry practitioners.

  • Marine tourism, marine protected areas and socio-ecological system resilience (with PhD student M. Pedju).
  • Marine tourism as an alternative livelihood to artisanal fishing in the less developed world (with PhD student B. Porter).
  • Tour operator assisted research in marine mammal science (collaboration with E. Martinez and K. Stockin).
  • Surf tourism (collaboration with N. Towner).
  • Impacts of tourism on bottlenose dolphins in the Bay of Islands, NZ (with PhD student C. Peters).
  • Impacts of tourism on common dolphins, Whakatane, NZ (with PhD student A. Meisner).
  • The effectiveness of environmental education in outdoor recreation settings (with Master's student C. Collins).
