Awards
Professor Seedhouse, in partnerhsip with South Staffordshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has been awarded this year's Improving Care with E-Technology Award at the 2006 Health Service Journal Awards. The Judges recognised the “Values Exchange“ project “for its distinguished and innovative use of IT to provide an electronic forum for canvassing views examining how the Trust delivers healthcare“.

The HSJ Awards are designed to identify, celebrate and share good practice amongst those working in the health and social care sector. There were over 920 entries across the 18 categories and South Staffordshire Healthcare was one of five to be shortlisted in its category.

Mike Cooke, Chief Executive of the Trust said “This is a fantastic achievement and recognises the commitment and ethusiasm of staff across the Trust who are using this innovative system to make a real difference to patients - the HSJ Awards are the “Oscars“ of health and social care. Values Exchange has energised the Trust and changed the way people think about themselves. It allows for real inclusion as everyone's voice can be heard and difficult themes can be discussed.“

Kate Diesfeld

Books
Kate Diesfeld and Professor Ian Freckelton recently co-authored an edited book on mental health law.

Diesfeld, K. and Freckleton, I. (2003) (eds). Involuntary Detention and Therapeutic Jurisprudence: International Perspectives on Civil Commitment. London: Ashgate, pp.630.

International developments within the last twenty years have demonstrated a shift in treatment for people suffering from mental illness. This shift has manifested itself in an emphasis on deinstitutionalization, increased scrutiny of detention and discharge decisions and, in some countries, in enforced community treatment. In this book, researchers from diverse disciplines examine the various aspects of decision-making relating to civil psychiatric detention and compare experiences in a variety of jurisdictions, including the UK, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Contributors: Kate Diesfeld, Ian Freckelton, Bruce J.
