About Us

Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Trauma Research Unit (ITRU) located  in the Faculty of Health. ITRU staff and students undertake research  that is aimed at gaining an understanding of the human experience of  trauma. We interpret trauma as physical, psychological or cultural  experiences that are extremely negative, uncontrollable, out of the  ordinary. Trauma can be sudden or cumulative. Representing the  diversity of health disciplines, we collaborate to reduce the  occurrence of trauma as well as promote effective interventions aimed  at reducing the harmful effects of trauma to individuals, families, and  society.

The Unit has five main research areas:

Objectives:

  • To advance knowledge in the field of trauma through high quality, innovative, collaborative research.
  • To translate trauma research findings for application into health professional practice and policy.
  • To convene trauma research meetings and seminars for faculty, students and community members.
  • To mentor post-graduate students in trauma research.
