ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. For more details, please refer to English Language Requirements in AUT's Academic Calendar.


This qualification provides vocational training for people working with those affected by violence, abuse and trauma. Areas include health, justice, and community sector agencies that offer crisis intervention. The course allows students to develop an understanding of the theory and practice in this field and the skills and thinking necessary to enhance work practice.

All papers in this diploma are available for credit towards the Bachelor of Health Science in Applied Mental Health.

WHAT THIS PROGRAMME COVERS

Students learn about current issues in violence, participate in trauma and abuse workshops, develop skills necessary for facilitating groups and for understanding group processes, and safety issues for clients in relation to codes of ethics and relevant legislation. The diploma also includes two supervised work placements with organisations and agencies that provide support and change in the violence, abuse, and trauma field.

Students work placements include: women’s refuge, probation services, alcohol and drug services, district health boards, alternative education, Barnardos, Victim Support, Youthline, Lifeline, Methodist Mission and Living Without Violence services.
