PATHWAYS

There are two pathway options on the Certificate in Health Care Support. The general pathway prepares students for undergraduate study in the health sciences and the dental pathway prepares students to become a dental surgery assistant.

GENERAL PATHWAY
This course develops students’ confidence, essential academic skills and prepares students for tertiary learning – the perfect choice if you don’t meet the entry requirements for our health sciences undergraduate courses.

  • Creates a pathway into your degree of choice
  • Prepares you for university study and increases your academic confidence
  • Small classes provide opportunity to make friends with other students and have 1:1 time with lecturers.

PAPERS

In the general pathway the four papers you will enrol in are:

554416 Introduction to Human Structure and Function I
554412 Introduction to Professional Development
554417 Society and Health
554696 Introduction to Human Development

Alongside studying health issues and concepts, these papers will help you develop academic skills such as academic reading and writing, critical thinking and research techniques.

Gaining entry into a health degree
Most students will need to obtain a grade average of ‘B’ across the four Certificate papers to gain university entrance and apply for entry into a health degree.

When you can start a health degree
The Certificate in Health Care Support runs twice a year for 15 weeks, beginning in March and July. Students on the Certificate should be aware that most of the health degrees at AUT begin in March only. The exceptions are for the Bachelor of Health Science, the Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing), the Bachelor of Health Science in Health Promotion, the Bachelor of Health Science in Applied Mental Health and Bachelor of Health Science in Psychology, which begin in both March and July.

DENTAL SURGERY ASSISTING PATHWAY
Students who choose the Dental Surgery Assisting pathway develop the skills necessary to be a competent dental assistant in private practice or in school dental clinics. These skills include communication and clinical skills and an understanding of how to run a dental office. Practical experience is gained in the AUT North Shore simulation laboratory and dental clinic and dental clinic placements.

What this programme covers
Students develop their academic literacy and communication and research skills. All students are introduced to Human and Dental Anatomy and Physiology. They also study dental clinic preparation, management, materials and instruments.

Career opportunities
This programme prepares students for further study or as a dental surgery assistant in private practice with dentists and hygienists or in school dental clinics with dental therapists.
