Mechanical Engineering Major: Bachelor of Engineering Technology

The Mechanical Engineering major is designed to prepare you for a role as an engineering technologist in any of two main areas – Mechanical Engineering and Production/Manufacturing Engineering. Engineering Technologists are responsible for providing, maintaining and applying or developing/designing different aspects of modern mechanical technology.

Bachelor of Engineering Technology: degree outline

Structure

Most papers last one semester and are worth 15 points. You must complete 120 points each year (360 points for the entire degree).

You will study eight papers in Years One and Two and seven papers in Year Three. The first year's papers are compulsory and your choice of papers in Years Two and Three will depend on the pathway you choose.

Year one papers - 120 points in total
You will extend your mathematical skills and establish key capabilities in engineering mechanics – statics and dynamics. You will also develop practical workshop, drawing and CAD skills, and an understanding of engineering materials, manufacturing processes and electrical fundamentals.

CORE PAPERS
714338 Engineering Mathematics (15)

705000 Engineering Design Communication (15)
705005 Engineering Graphics (15)

Year two papers - 120 points in total

The second year continues to develop your mathematical skills and introduces fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer. You can choose between two specialties:

  • Mechanical Engineering develops key skills in analysis of mechanics and dynamics of machines, components and structures.
  • Production Engineering develops skills in quality and reliability of goods and processes, production operations management and planning of engineering projects.
