Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

For those curious about enrolling in a PhD, think self-regulated study with the opportunity to pursue an area of research which highly interests you. Throw in the chance to present your work on an international platform and you have postgraduate study, says AUT University postgraduate Jonathan Currie.

“It’s a whole different ball game to undergraduate study. Completing a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering has enabled me to further my education in a range of topics, from physics to mathematics to process control. While my research is targeted, the knowledge gained from the experience will provide a solid grounding in several disciplines which I know will aid my employability in future years.”

In addition to this, he says, is the industrial experience gained from consulting projects, placing him in an excellent position to apply for competitive jobs. The excellent reputation and enthusiasm of his supervisor, with strong industry contacts, was also a big drawcard to the programme.

“Everyone, from staff to other students, is passionate about their own field of study and it contributes to a great working environment.” Jonathan says part of his postgraduate studies has enabled him to be involved in consulting projects within the university. “To date I have worked on software development for a multinational oil company as well as modelling projects for technology start-ups in New Zealand.

“Continuing my Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) to a PhD at AUT has been an excellent decision that I have thoroughly enjoyed. With novel research ideas, enthusiastic supervisors and the school supporting you to attend domestic and international events, AUT has enabled me to fully experience all aspects of postgraduate study.”
