You might work for a hospital supporting high-tech medical equipment, work alongside engineers modelling bridges and tall buildings or provide IT solutions to corporate clients through your own company. You can also continue into postgraduate study and conduct cutting-edge research, including processing data and helping find answers for the Square Kilometre Array – a project which will build our understanding of the universe and drive technological development worldwide.

There are limited places available. AUT encourages early application. Applicants will normally be selected on the basis of their level of academic achievement and may be required to attend a selection interview.


Entry requirements

  • University Entrance
  • NCEA: Preference will be given to students who have completed Year 13 with a rank score of 120 level 3 credits or higher, and have one or more subjects from Calculus, Mathematics, or Statistics.
  • CIE: Minimum grade of D in AS Mathematics.
  • Students without the above background may be directed to take certain mathematics papers in their first year.

Other majors: First-year papers available at South Campus.


Additional Majors and/or Minors

You may choose a second major, either from the Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences (called a double major) or from additional majors outside the Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences. Minors are also available in these subjects. The availability of additional majors and minors will depend on timetabling and subject restrictions, and in some cases, choosing an additional major or minor may require students to undertake extra points to complete their degree.

Structure

Year 1 & 2
You complete eight papers as an introduction to computer and information sciences before focusing on a chosen major in Year 2 and 3. Compulsory papers for all majors are: Applied Communication, Programming 1, Computing Technology in Society, Foundations of IT Infrastructure, Enterprise Systems, Programming 2, Computer Network Principles and one mathematics paper from level 5 maths options (depending on your maths background).


Year 2 & 3
You specialise in your chosen major. You develop strong technical knowledge in IT, creative problem-solving skills and the ability to analyse, design and maintain IT solutions. You gain professional skills in programming, IT infrastructure and networks, communication and teamwork, project management, ethics and professional practice, security and information systems.

In Year 3, you work on a real-life research and development project, which may involve software development or commercial research for organisations like Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Ltd, Eagle Technology and FutureTech.
