Invited talk by Associate Professor Jianwei Huang

Associate Professor Jianwei Huang (Chinese University of Hong Kong) gave an interesting talk "Crowdsourced Mobile Video Streaming" on Thursday 30 June 2016. This event was jointly supported by School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and IEEE NZ North Section.

IEEE DL Tour 2016; Lecture by Professor Jalel Ben-Othman Tuesday 7 June 2016; 9.30 – 4 pm, WF303, AUT University City Campus

Professor Jalel Ben-Othman (University of Paris 13, France), delivered his IEEE distinguished lecture at AUT University. He also gave lectures in Christchurch and Wellington on 8th and 9th June 2016, respectively.

NSRG Panel Discussion

School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences (Network and Security Research Group) hosts a panel discussion “A PhD Journey: From a Proposal to Congratulations!” on Thursday 5 May this year. Three panel members (Associate Professor Russel Pears, Dr Brian Cusack, and Akbar Hossain) actively engaged in the discussion on some aspects of PhD journey from the proposal to the successful completion of an oral examination (viva-voce). Students have participated in the discussion. A/Professor Nurul Sarkar (Panel Chair) received positive feedback indicating that the event was successful.

NSRG visits SeNse
The network researchers from NSRG visited AUT's Sensor network lab (SeNse) on Thursday 10 September 2015.

Professor Adnan Al-Anbuky (Director, SeNse Lab) and his team talked about Sensor Networks and demonstrated some of the recent projects involving remote monitoring of live data from deployed sensor network in the country.

Professor Ying-Dar Lin (National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan), delivered his IEEE distinguished lecture at AUT University. He also gave lectures in Christchurch and Wellington on 17th and 20th August 2015, respectively.

CSAC14 Shanghai
Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar delivered his keynote address to the two joint conferences, namely 2014 Asia-Pacific Electronics and Electrical Engineering Conference (EEEC’14) and Computer Science and Application Conference (CSAC’14), held in Shanghai (China) on 28th December 2014. Especially addressed are the use and misuse of computer simulation and some aspects of simulation credibility.

Dr Nurul Sarkar has successfully delivered his keynote talk “Recent development and research activities in wireless networks” at the 4th International Conference on Electronics, Communications and Networks (CECNET’14) in Beijing on 13th December 2014.

held at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, Friday 5 September 2014. Three PhD students and Associate Professor Jairo Gutierrez gave presentations at the workshop. Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar also attended the event.

NSRG Panel Discussion
School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (Network and Security Research Group) hosts a panel discussion “Submitting a good thesis for examination” on Friday 30 May this year. Three panel members (Dr Jairo Gutierrez, Krassie Petrova, and Dr Sayan Ray) actively engaged in the discussion on some aspects of developing a good thesis for examination. The panel focused on writing introductory and concluding chapters, methodology, thesis main contributions as well as presentation. The criteria for AUT thesis examination were highlighted. Students have participated in the discussion. Despite the busy time of the year about 35 research students (mostly PhD students) within the School/Faculty attended the event. Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar (Panel Chair) received positive feedback from the participants indicating that the event was successful.

Dr Nurul Sarkar visited WiPro Technologies (Kolkata, India) and gave a talk on “Recent Development in High Throughput Wireless Network Technologies”. The talk generated a lot of interest among the engineers/scientists for research collaboration.

Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar’s visit to Sasken Communication Technologies (Bangalore, India) was hosted by Dr Sridhar Varadharajan (Company CEO Group). Dr Sarkar gave a talk on “Recent Development and Trends in Wireless Network Technologies” which generated a lot of interest for further discussion and collaboration.

Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar visited Jadavpur University for a special meeting for international research collaboration with key Network and Communications researchers in the region hosted by IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Kolkata Section.

Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar was invited for a talk at University Utara Malaysia (UUM). His talk “Writing a Research Proposal for Postgraduate Study” addressing staff and postgraduate students generated a lot of interest and further discussion.

AUT Delegates at the ATNAC and ITC Energy Forum 2013
Dr William Liu, Craig Walker, and Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar attended the Australasian Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (ATNAC 2013) held in conjunction with the 22nd ITC Specialist Seminar on Energy Efficient and Green Networking (SSEEGN 2013).

Dr William Liu presented his student co-author paper “EESManager: Making Greener Cloud Apps”. Craig Walker (PhD student of Professor Adnan Al-Anbuky) presented his paper on “Hunter Friendly Fire Avoidance: Modeling a wireless solution”. Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar presented his student co-author paper “Quantifying the Performance Degradation of IPv6 for TCP in Windows and Linux” and chaired a session on Mobile Cellular and Wireless Networks II.

NSRG Workshop with guest speakers from National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) China
NSRG Workshop was organised by the NZ North Section IEEE Communications Society Chapter and School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Auckland University of Technology. The day comprised a series of presentations on some aspects of wireless networking and communications. We had speakers from the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) China and AUT’s Network and Security Research Group. There was ample opportunity for informal discussions and networking.

Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar has successfully delivered his talk at Unitec Institute of Technology. His address focussed on the best practices in network protocol design, modelling and performance evaluation. Dr Sarkar’s talk at Unitec opens opportunities for inter-organisational research collaboration with industry participation.

 15th International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (ICCIT'12)
Associate Professor Nurul Sarkar has successfully delivered his keynote address "Best Practices and Trends in Computer Science and Engineering Education" at the 15th International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (ICCIT'12) on Sunday 23rd December 2012 in Chittagong, Bangladesh. His speech focused on the best teaching practices and challenges in developing and managing distant laboratory experiment for networking and hardware students. 3rd International Conference on Network Applications, Protocols and Services (NetAPPS)
Nurul Sarkar delivered his keynote address “Strategies and Guidelines for Improving Wireless Network Performance” at the 3rd International Conference on Network Applications, Protocols and Services (NetAPPS) in Sintok, Malaysia from 19-21 September.

2 - 4 September 2012

Dr Jairo Gutierrez and Dr William Liu attended the 4th Digital Earth Summit in Wellington. Keynote speakers included Carlo Ratti (MIT´s SENSEable City Lab), Prof. John Richards (ANU), Richard Simpson (Nextspace, ISDE NZ representative) and Ed Parsons (Google). It was a superbly organised conference in a collaborative effort between Wellington´s local government and Land Information New Zealand. The 5th Summit will be in 2014 in Nagoya (Japan). The summits are the main conferences of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE).

Dr Luke Krieg (AUT Research Office) gave a talk “external funding opportunity for Network and Security Research Group”. The talk generated a lot of interest among the group members especially preparing for funding applications.

Dr Kashif Nisar from Universiti Utara Malaysia has commenced his Kashif Nisar at NSRGpostdoctoral research at AUT under the supervision of Dr Nurul Sarkar from March this year. He visited AUT for about two weeks (April 4 - 20) and gave a talk on his postdoctoral research “Voice Priority Queue Scheduler of VoIP over Wireless Networks”.

Dr Nurul Sarkar has been re-elected Chairman of the IEEE NZ Communications Society (ComSoc) Chapter (joint North and South sections). He has organising several high quality technical events, including distinguished lecturer talks and workshops throughout the year.

Dr Nurul Sarkar has been invited to join the Editorial Advisory Board for an IGI Global book series to come out in 2013 “Cognitive Radio Technology Applications for Wireless and Mobile Ad Hoc Networks”.

Dr William Liu has secured AUT grant of $15K to develop a green computing knowledge database and $5K to investigate the power management tools for university environment. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

Dr Nurul Sarkar has been appointed as Fellow of ITU-UUM (International Telecommunication Union in Asia Pacific Region in partnership with Universiti Utara Malaysia).
