Admission requirements

Doctor of Philosophy

The normal admission requirement for a doctoral degree is one of the following in a discipline appropriate to the proposed research:

  • A master’s degree with honours; or,
  • A bachelor’s degree with honours (equivalent to four years of study)

The degree must have a standard equivalent to first class or second class (first division) honours. The degree should include advanced learning in research, execution of a research project and a written report on the research.

Information required for assessing an application:

  • Faculty and/or field you wish to conduct your study in
  • Academic transcripts
  • Grading scale for postgraduate qualification
  • Degree certificates (undergraduate and postgraduate)
  • Title of the thesis/dissertation/research project
  • 1-2 page document (maximum) outlining your proposed research project
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • If English is not your first language you need to provide evidence of English language proficiency – IELTS (Academic) test results or recognised equivalent. If your postgraduate study was completed in English within 3 years, this may be waived
    • Engineering
      Two written academic references are required
    • Art & design
      We also require a portfolio (between 10-15 annotated images as a pdf or PowerPoint file or a URL for a website)
    • PhD in Economics
      Provide evidence of completing the courses Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics at postgraduate level. Course syllabus or similar is required for assessment of comparability of those courses to those taken in New Zealand
    • Doctor of Health Science or Doctor of Education
      Evidence of a minimum of five years’ professional experience in your specific area of research

Note: International applicants enrolled in Doctor of Health Science or Doctor of Education are not eligible for domestic tuition fees, international tuition fees will apply.

Master of Philosophy degree

The normal admission requirement for the Master of Philosophy degree is one of the following:

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree; or
  • A bachelor’s honours degree; or
  • A bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma; or
  • A bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience relevant to the proposed research

The admission qualification must have been completed with the equivalent of a B grade average or higher.

Applicants are expected to have appropriate level of proficiency in English. Applicants for whom English is not their first language should provide the IELTS (Academic) test results or recognised equivalent. The required scores in the IELTS (Academic) test are 6.5 overall and no less than 6.0 in the rest of the band.

How to Apply for the Master of Philosophy & Doctor of Philosophy

Step 1:
Contact the Graduate Research School and provide the information required, as outlined above, for assessing an application

Step 2:
The GRS will assess your eligibility and forward to the relevant faculty to confirm possible research areas and supervisors

Step 3:
Where the Faculty confirms the availability of resources, including supervision, they will request for you to complete the following:

Step 4:
Once the research proposal is confirmed by the Faculty, it will be sent to the Graduate Research School for approval and to issue an Offer of Place

Other postgraduate programmes

Master's degree (180 or 240 points)

You need to have completed one of the following to a merit standard in a relevant field:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Graduate diploma
  • Professional qualification equivalent to a 3-year undergraduate degree
  • Professional experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree or recognised professional qualification

Master's degree (less than 180 points)

You need to have completed one of the following to a merit standard in a relevant field:
  • A 3-year bachelor's degree and one year of advanced study
  • A 4-year bachelor's degree
  • A postgraduate diploma
  • An undergraduate degree followed by relevant professional experience

Postgraduate certificate or diploma

You need to have completed one of the following in a relevant field:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Professional qualification equivalent to a 3-year bachelor's degree
  • Professional experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree or recognised professional qualification

Bachelor's degree with honours

You need a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, with above average performance in your final year.
