Bachelor of Education - Montessori Early Childhood Teaching

Montessori education is based on theories of child development originated by Italian educator, Maria Montessori, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

It stresses the importance of adapting the child’s learning environment to his or her developmental level, and the role of physical activity in absorbing academic concepts and practical skills.

Montessori education views children as being capable of self-directed, hands-on learning.

Structure and content

This specialty was developed with the Montessori Association of New Zealand to equip early childhood educators with the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to thrive in a Montessori early childhood setting.

AUT has strong links with Montessori education centres and students are encouraged to complete as much hands-on experience as possible.
