Undergraduate courses provide students with a solid grounding in the study of education and teaching.
Courses set students on the path to further education and research, or give an opportunity to move directly into the workforce as teachers at the early childhood, primary, secondary or tertiary level.
The Bachelor of Education is a requirement for those wishing to teach in early childhood centres and schools in New Zealand.
Specialisation in the third year is possible for both Early Childhood Teaching and Primary Teaching as follows:

Secondary teaching
- Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching - Student teachers who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching are eligible to seek provisional registration as a teacher and apply for teaching positions in secondary schools.
Tertiary teaching
- Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Teaching - Graduates will be qualified to teach and work with adults in the community, business, industry, polytechnics, private training establishments and universities.
Career Development
A Graduate course is also offered for those who are working in the career development field but who lack formal qualifications, as well as those who aspire to work in this field.
Other Graduate courses
These are available to those who have an existing undergraduate qualification.
- Graduate Diploma in Arts and Graduate Certificate in Arts - Enables a graduate to advance professionally or pursue postgraduate study. Completion of this qualification will not fulfil NZ Teachers Council requirements for provisional registration as a teacher.
- Graduate Diploma in (Specialty) Education - This is designed for professionals with an existing teacher education qualification that is acceptable to the New Zealand Teachers Council, who wish to gain a recognised specialist qualification in their chosen area.
