Entry requirements

  • Applicants are required to have met University Entrance requirements.
  • Applicants must meet the New Zealand Teacher Council's Requirements. These include:
    • Supplying two referee reports
    • Attending an interview (in person, phone or Skype)
    • A numeracy and literacy assessment
    • Completing a disclosure/personal declaration form
    • Providing authorisation to disclose information for police clearance.

Working with children is an exciting career – no two days are ever the same. The Certificate in Education aims to enable students to gain confidence and competence in a range of abilities and skills necessary to work with children and families, in family homes as nannies, or as beginning educators in early childhood centres or primary settings.

What this qualification covers

This qualification covers the theory and practice relevant to primary and early childhood education, enabling graduates to support centre/classroom teachers. Course content varies depending on the specialty chosen by the student but will include papers that introduce the theories behind human development and explore the family unit and its role in a child’s education.

Career opportunities

  • Assisting teachers in an early childhood centre or primary school
Graduates may apply for entry to the Bachelor of Education. There are a limited number of places offered each year. These are usually reserved for those following a pathway from a Certificate in Introduction to Early Childhood Education into the Bachelor of Education.
