Master of Philosophy

Computing and Mathematical Sciences

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a one year research only masters degree. It provides an opportunity for students to undertake a research topic of an applied or professional nature under the supervision of Computing and Mathematical Sciences staff. Alternatively, the MPhil can provide a pathway to more advanced research at doctoral level.

Entry requirements

Structure

Students will complete an original thesis during this year of study.

Staff in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences are available to supervise MPhil research on a wide range of computing and mathematical science topics. The School has extensive research capabilities in the following areas:

Applied Mathematics

Artificial Intelligence

  • Expert systems
  • Modelling natural language
  • Robotics

Information Systems

  • Electronic commerce
  • Global information technology
  • IT adoption and diffusion
  • Management of information systems function
  • National IT policy issues
  • Strategic information systems

Knowledge Engineering

  • Computational intelligence methods and applications
  • Intelligent support in business applications and in BioInformatics
  • Knowledge discovery in brain sciences
  • Speech and language engineering

Statistics

  • Small firm performance measurement
  • Statistics education

System Usability

  • Accessing the usability of work surfaces
  • Processes and tools to improve human-computer interaction

Students can also work on topics that incorporate aspects of more than one of these research areas, with supervision from staff in those groups.

Career opportunities

It is expected that graduates with a Master of Philosophy will have gained the necessary skills and qualifications to follow an academic or research career leading to a PhD. Alternatively, their research topic may lead them to a position of expertise in their chosen field.
