AUT University IT SymposiumHealth Informatics @ AUT – new papers for 2008

Dealing with information is a key element of the health practitioner’s role. Researchers and administrators also need to be able to collect, analyse and store information about health in electronic form.

Health Informatics deals with the use of computers and communication technologies to support healthcare. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of Computerisation of general practice, has one of the most advanced health IT industries and leads the world in the use of health information by the government. Recent developments in this area have seen the setting up of the New Zealand health IT cluster (http://www.healthit.org.nz/) and the health information strategy action committee (http://www.hisac.govt.nz/).

Two Health Informatics papers (level 7 407919 and level 9 409219) are being offered for the first time in semester 1 2008 by the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences. Both papers will focus on practical aspects of health informatics in New Zealand and give students a grounding in the issues and skills involved in this exciting area.

Topics covered include:

  • The Electronic health record
  • Primary Care informatics
  • SNOMED CT and vocabularies
  • Ethics and privacy in informatics
  • Public Health informatics
  • HL7 and interconnectivity
  • Ehealth and telecare

At level 9 (Postgraduate) students will be expected to collaborate to produce a journal paper, suitable for “Health Care Informatics Review Online” (hcro.enigma.co.nz/), and at level 7 they will do a research project. External speakers are being invited from the health informatics community. There are no formal prerequisites for these papers but potential students are invited to contact Dr Dave Parry (dave.parry@aut.ac.nz) the paper coordinator for further information.

The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences are holding the following research seminars:
