Breakout sessions

You will participate in a series of breakout session workshops with a selection of AUT’s leading PhD candidates on subjects such as remote operation of AUT’s $1mil telescope, mobile technologies and augmented reality.

WORKSHOP ONE: Radio telescope

Want to drive a $1 million dollar telescope from your computer?  AUT's radio telescope is based in Warkworth - north of Auckland - and it can be remotely controlled as it looks into space further than any optical telescope including Hubble.  This workshop will give you the chance to learn about the computer automation of handling this device and let you see this serious piece of international science kit in action.  You'll also get preview the Square Kilometer Array - the next super science project worth $4 billion EURO which may be co-located in NZ!

WORKSHOP TWO: Mobile technologies

You've been able to TXT your questions and messages straight to our screen. Yes, we've filtered a few - but essentially how did we achieve this?  In this workshop our team will walk you through how we did it and talk more about secure mobile networks and just what's going on in that phone of yours. Just as the telephone changed the world so has radio packet data.

WORKSHOP THREE: Augmented reality

Augmented reality - sounds like something from Dr. Who right?  Well actually it's a real practice and it's growing fast in popularity.  Our QR (Quick Recognition code) is a basic example of what can be achieved when cameras and phones interact.  But let's not stop there because there's much more that can be done - especially with the very powerful processors coming onto the market for handsets. In this workshop you'll get a ground level taster of this science and maybe, just maybe a hint of magic!
