Television and Screen Production Major: Bachelor of Communication Studies

Undeniably one of the 20th century's greatest inventions, television is a source of news, information and entertainment that has become commonplace in our homes and businesses. Despite its evolving nature, information delivery and exchange (be it fiction or non-fiction) lies at the heart of the industry.

The Television and Screen Production major in the Bachelor of Communication Studies degree (BCS) gives you the ability to make exciting and innovative screen productions that tell a good story. It focuses on the development of creative and professional skills in television and broadcasting. You will develop the practical knowledge to produce programmes suitable for large, medium or small screens.

  • Aimed at those with serious aspirations to work in the broadcasting, independent production and corporate sectors of the screen industry
  • Hands-on study of professional multi-camera and digital video production
  • Contains a thorough grounding in the theory, practice and critical analysis of the television broadcast industry
  • Graduates will be multi-skilled in pre-production, production and post-production roles, and able to manage, organise and collaborate within production teams
  • Access to the latest digital field equipment, screen and television studios, performance studios and edit suites in the new WG learning precinct
  • Opportunity to develop practical production skills and make a 5 to 10 minute corporate or community video for a specific client in the final year
  • Clients have included Starship Hospital, Department of Conservation and Project K

Structure

Most papers last one semester and are worth 15 points. Students must complete 120 points each year (360 points for the entire degree). In each year students study core (compulsory) papers, and select other papers from a range of options.

Year one papers - 120 points in total

Introduces essential theory and practice as a basis for later specialisation. This focuses on media and interpersonal communication and the relationships between communication, technology and New Zealand society.

The Television and Screen Production major starts in Year 2 with the core papers – Studio Production and Video Production. These papers introduce you to theory and practice of basic multi-camera and single camera productions.

Year three papers - 120 points in total

Papers in Year 3 will provide you with the theoretical and practical skills needed to achieve professional industry standards. You will explore the creative application of the various production processes. Individual practical productions will assist you in developing skills in research, direction, camera, sound, lighting, editing and scriptwriting, so you will be ready to make an informed and creative contribution to the television screen industries. Using the latest digital technology, you will learn to work in teams by assisting each other with presentation,  production management, interviewing, camera operation and sound recording.
