Dr Irene Ryan joined AUT University in 2004 as a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Sport and Recreation before moving to the Business School in 2009. Prior to joining AUT, Irene held academic positions at the University of Auckland in the Department of Management and Employment Relations. Irene did not enter formal academic studies until her early thirties when she trained as a secondary school teacher. She has experienced a range of job / career transitions. Her research interests are therefore reflective of her life experiences illustrated by the interdisciplinary nature of her doctoral research where she examined the ways gender and age intersect for women within the contexts of paid employment and masters sport.
Irene is a member of the Gender and Diversity Research Group at AUT and in a voluntary capacity is the current Chair of two sport governance boards. Her passion is sport both as a participant and avid spectator of a variety of sports.
Irene teaches courses in Organisational Behaviour, Leadership and Management. She has supervised post-graduate students in topics such as Maori leadership in Sport, barriers for women pursuing managerial careers in hospitality, ethnicity and knowledge transfer in rugby and perceptions of customer service in hotels.
