Biography

Born in 1979, Stephanié completed her B.Com (2000), Honours B.Com (2001) (Cum Laude), M.Com (2003) (Cum Laude) and PhD (2007) degrees in Economics. In 2004, she obtained the Global Insight prize for best M.Com dissertation. At North-West University (NWU) (Potchefstroom campus) she studied Economic Development under Prof. Wim Naudé, a local pioneer in the field. Stephanié’s PhD thesis (under the supervision of Professor Wim Naudé) describes the construction of an Economic- and Non-Economic Quality-of-Life Index for South Africa. In 2004, Stephanié took up the position of part-time Lecturer and Junior Research Fellow in the School of Economics, Risk Management and International Trade (SERI) at North-West University (NWU) (Potchefstroom Campus) in South Africa, where she taught introductory micro- and macroeconomics, personal finance management and development economics. During her first year as lecturer at NWU (Potchefstroom campus), she obtained the highest student evaluation in SERI. In July 2005 she was pro¬moted to full-time Lecturer and Research Fellow. After completion of her PhD, Stephanié was promoted to Senior Lecturer and Research Fellow.

Stephanié is a Development Economist at heart and believes that in order to create passionate economists (who must one day rectify all the World’s problems) one must focus on creating a love for Economics with the first year Business students. Therefore teaching at first year level will always remain a personal project and challenge to be achieved every year. Stephanié’s primary research activity is in the area of Economic and Human Development. Her major achievement/contribution was the construction of the abovementioned indices for South Africa on a sub-national level, which is currently being used by NWU for further development research. In addition, Stephanié has participated in numerous smaller projects, using her skills of economic analysis, data collection & interpretation, and report writing.
