Thereafter, he has been working as a Research Fellow with the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore from 2003-2007, before joining as a lecturer in the Business Economics Department at AUT University at the beginning of 2008. He is a recognized expert on economic integration in the Asia-Pacific, particularly related to Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), having published papers, articles, books and book chapters on the subject. In recognition of his expertise, his paper on FTAs involving the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) member countries was included at the 2006 IMF-World Bank Annual Program of Seminars in Singapore.

Rahul has been invited to present and discuss his views at several international forums and has also presented papers at leading conferences in the Australasian region, including the Australian Conference of Economists in Sydney in 2004 and the New Zealand Economists Association Conference in Auckland in 2003. His paper on Asian FTAs involving ASEAN, China and India was among the first research papers that highlighted the complexity and diversity of agreements being negotiated and their implications for the ongoing process of regional economic integration. Rahul has also taken a significant interest in the upcoming developments in the Indian economy and its de-facto integration with the rest of Asia.

Rahul’s research findings have been widely cited by researchers working on Asian economic integration. He has also been invited to referee papers for several international journals, such as Journal of Asian Economics, Pacific Affairs, The World Economy and the Southern Economic Journal. His recently published, peer-reviewed journal articles appeared in The World Economy and the Journal of World Trade.

At AUT, Rahul intends to deepen his research on New Zealand’s economic integration with the Asia-Pacific. Specifically, he will focus on emerging opportunities for New Zealand businesses. He also intends to undertake research on analyzing the implications of Rules of Origin (RoO) in FTAs for existing production networks involving Asia-Pacific economies.

In recognition of his research expertise, Rahul was invited to be a panelist speaker at the Inaugural India Business Forum organized by AUT Business School in 2008. He has also been involved in refereeing for the New Zealand Economic Papers in 2009.
