Biography

Gail Pacheco graduated with a Masters of Commerce in Economics with First Class Honours from The University of Auckland in 2001. After briefly working for consulting firm KPMG, she returned to academic life as a lecturer in the Business Economics Department at AUT University at the end of 2001. Based on the work she had done on her Masters dissertation, Gail continued with her research interests in the area of labour economics. She has published work on the intergenerational transmission of welfare dependency and gender differences in labour market outcomes. She then embarked on her PhD thesis in 2003 with the support of a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship. Her research presents a detailed empirical enquiry into the labour market impacts in New Zealand from increases in youth and adult minimum wages over the period of 1986 to 2004.

One of the main contributions of this work involves the identification of demographic groups most likely to face minimum wages in the labour market. This thesis estimates the complex relationships between increases in the minimum wage and its incidence across the population. Gail also evaluates the link between earning the minimum wage and both household income inequality and poverty. Her presentation analysing the link between the minimum wage and poverty won the best economics paper award at the Australasian PhD Conference in Economics and Business in 2005.

Gail’s PhD thesis also develops a new methodological approach for isolating the effects of the minimum wage on employment outcomes, as well as examining the economic impact of the minimum wage from the employers’ perspective, using event study analysis.

Gail’s teaching focuses on markets and pricing, research applications in business and econometric analysis. She continues to publish her research findings, both from her thesis and other projects. Her recently published journal articles appear in International Review of Applied Economics, Auditing – A Journal of Theory and Practice and Economics of Education Review.
