Visiting Fulbright Senior Specialist Professor Amar Umjad
12-20 March 2008
Professor Amjad Umar visited the School of Computing and
Mathematical Sciences on the last leg of his programme (AUT
coordinator: Krassie Petrova). Two other universities were also
included in his visit to New Zealand - the University of Otago and the
University of Auckland.
During his stay with us Professor Umar consulted several project
teams at the School, all related to mobile and wireless research,
practice and teaching. Amjad also gave three very well attended
presentations to thee different audiences – an evening talk to members
of the wider ICT community in Auckland (organised jointly with the New
Zealand Computer Society- NZCS), a seminar for postgraduate students at
the School, and a specialised presentation to the researchers at the
Knowledge Engineering and Discovery Research Institute (KEDRI). Though
short, Amjad’s visit was very fruitful and opened interesting
possibilities for further collaboration.

International Symposium on Research Methods ISRM@PACIS 2007:
Research Paradigms: Constructs, Contexts and Culture
The active debate relating to research philosophies and
the role of theory in Information Systems and Technology research
methods has entered a crucial phase as researchers often find
themselves caught in the intersection of differing philosophical
viewpoints of research.
The International Symposium on Research Methods (ISRM) which
took place on 4th July 2007 at AUT University engaged participants and
presenters in a lively debate and provoked a broad exchange of
perspectives on a range of issues related to critical analysis,
research rigour and research relevance.
Organised as a pre–Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems
(PACIS) event, the half-day Symposium was part of the series of
symposia held under the auspices of the Information Institute
prior to major academic events. It was sponsored by the AUT University
Centre for Research on Information Systems Management (CRISM).
Symposium Chairs:
- Dr Ray Hackney. Brunel University, UK, Chair of the ISRM Steering Committee
- Krassie Petrova, AUT University, New Zealand
Key note address: Professor Stephen MacDonell, AUT University, New Zealand.
Symposium Presenters (click to download the MS Power point presentation):
- Dr Hans Lehmann, University of Victoria at Wellington, New Zealand
- Dr Jillian Reid, University of Auckland, New Zealand
- Professor Kay Fielden, UNITEC New Zealand
- Professor John Venable, Curtin University of Technology, Australia
- Leo Hitchcock, AUT University, New Zealand
