Business Economics

Business Economics is developing a distinctive and increasingly popular profile in New Zealand and overseas. The discipline is currently the fastest growing major and double-major in the Business School.

Our focus is on business itself and the business decision-maker rather than on the traditional role of economics in public policy. This is underpinned by our strong emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach, which is guided by our awareness and plurality of analytical traditions.

The Economics team comprises a lively, international group of economists, with research interests in human resource economics and industrial relations; international trade and finance; development economics; institutional economics; socio-economic policy; geographical economics; productivity variations; and policy evaluation and auditing. This approach has been welcomed by the community of economics scholars in New Zealand, attracting a 100% research-active rating in the country’s recent research quality assessment (PBRF 2006).

Our team’s primary teaching aim is to apply economics and socio-economic principles in areas that are of interest and relevance to most businesses. Our research informs our teaching, particularly the Business Economics major and double majors within the Bachelor of Business (BBus) programme, and advanced economics courses in the BBus Honours and Master of Business (MBus) programmes. We also make an active contribution to the School’s increasingly popular MBA programme.

Our applied focus is also reflected in our published research, which can be found in both, mainstream economics journals and in journals traditionally associated with other business disciplines, but in which economists are known to have applied their methods and reasoning. Our researchers have had their papers accepted for publication in a wide variety of highly regarded, internationally recognised journal outlets, including:
