Research Summary:
My main interests are in intellectual property, especially copyright law and digital technology. I have presented at conferences in NZ, Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe. My first article, published by the International Review of Intellectual Property and Competition Law, deals with a controversial and much traversed issue on the idea-expression dichotomy in copyright law. The article in the European Intellectual Property Review is on peer-to-peer file sharing and the s.92A debacle in NZ which resulted in the Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Act 2011. It compares the legislative initiatives in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and NZ. I am particularly interested in the intersection between copyright and plagiarism and have written on search engines and their limited role as heuristic devices in detecting plagiarism. Another of my articles, inspired by the United States case of AV v iParadigms on copyright infringement, focuses on the Turnitin software as a plagiarism tool in tertiary education.
