Biography:

Dr Macky joined AUT at the beginning of 2007, after a 25-year career in both academic and consulting environments. Over the years, he has taught a wide variety of courses in the areas of Organisational Behaviour, Industrial / Organisational Psychology, Human Resource Management, the Sociology of Work, Organisation Development, and Quantitative Research Methods.

Prior to joining AUT, he was a Senior Lecturer in the Management & International Business Department on the Auckland campus of Massey University, where he was for 5 years. He has also held a variety of positions at Auckland University, where he was awarded a Distinguished Teaching Award in 1998. He has also held positions as a Manager with Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, was a Senior Consultant at KPMG, and has been the proprietor of his own consulting businesses.

Research areas:

  • Employee responses to high-performance work systems
  • Organisational restructuring and downsizing
  • Generational differences at work
  • Why employees do or don’t join unions
  • The application of multivariate data analyses techniques to large data sets

Current Research Projects:

  • Investigating employee affective responses to downsizing events, and the mediating impact of downsizing practices on these outcomes
  • Looking at the relationship between managerial work practices included under the ‘high-performance’ banner and employee well-being
  • A critical analysis of whether generational differences at work really exist or a managerial myth in the making.
