GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE LEGAL EXECUTIVE DIPLOMA

This programme is designed by the New Zealand Law Society and is aimed primarily at staff in legal offices who undertake this study on a part-time basis.


WHAT IS A LEGAL EXECUTIVE?

A legal executive is a skilled assistant to a lawyer, and is responsible for carrying out tasks such as:

  • assisting in the sale and purchase of land
  • administering a deceased person's estate
  • preparing, and filing in court, documents on which court cases are to be based

Preparing documents for:

  • agreements between landlords and tenants
  • formation of new companies
  • sale and purchase of businesses; and family agreements

Most legal executives write letters, interview clients, and sometimes work away from the office. As they gain experience, they undertake increasingly responsible duties. They are required to uphold confidentiality and be honest and trustworthy.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

On completing the national external examinations for the prescribed papers appointed by the New Zealand Law Society, graduates will have the skills and knowledge needed to work as a legal executive.
