Business Interdisciplinary Studies

KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE

In the first year you will learn about ‘doing business’ and will gain a understanding of core business disciplines and how they interact and impact on each other.

Business Interdisciplinary Studies (the first stage of the Bachelor of Business) allows you to study business as a whole. It focuses on the development of your professional business capabilities and how they can be applied in the New Zealand business environment.

LEARNING RELEVANT TO BUSINESS

Your learning will be practical and applied to real business cases.  You will participate in:

  • Feasibility studies
  • Calculating profit and other measures of success in business
  • Gathering and analysing business data
  • Setting up a small business
  • Analysing organisational performance
  • Examining the impact of globalisation
  • Investigating the social responsibility of business
  • Exploring cross cultural management
  • Planning your own personal, professional and career development


DEVELOPMENT OF PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS CAPABILITIES

You will also develop professional business capabilities and how they can be applied in the New Zealand business environment such as:

  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Research and inquiry

BUSINESS DISCIPLINES

In the first year of your study you will cover disciplines which includes accounting; marketing; finance; economics; management; law; and social science. This gives you a solid grounding for further study in your chosen major(s).


PAPERS

Business Interdisciplinary Studies (120 points) are made up of the following compulsory papers* and are based on business themes:

475110 The Environment of Business
475120 Business Information Management
475130 Globalisation and Business Enterprise
476140 Managing Business Relationships

A student would normally be expected to complete 475110, 475120, 475130 and 476140 before being permitted to enrol in papers from selected major(s).

* Finance students are required to complete an additional paper: Fundamentals of Finance (compulsory for Finance majors only)
