Sport and Recreation Management

New Zealand is a nation that values sport and recreation. Sport and Recreation has strong links to the health, tourism, advertising and media sectors. For postgraduate students, sport and recreation is best conceptualised as a multidisciplinary field within which the specialisations of management, marketing and economics amongst others are utilised to explore similarities and differences between sport and recreation and other industries.

RESEARCH

Sport and recreation management research at AUT seeks to help sport organisations and their stakeholders add value to each others’ activities. This includes working with event management companies and sport organisations to understand their markets, design strategy and create appropriate governance systems for the sector. Our research is underpinned by mainstream management and marketing theory but seeks to identify anomalies or inconsistencies where mainstream models may struggle to explain facets fully for the sport and recreation sector.

Examples of student research include:

  • Alliances between National Sport Organisations and Professional Sport Franchises
  • Board Performance of Non-profit Organisations
  • Interorganisational relationships between a National Sports Organisation, Confederation and International Federation

Postgraduate papers include*:

  • Advanced Sport Development
  • Advanced Sport and Recreation Management

* Plus other Management and Marketing papers
