People and employment offers students the only integrated programme in Human Resource Management (HRM) and Employment Relations in New Zealand. AUT has the largest concentration of expertise in these areas within New Zealand, and has one of the top two concentrations in the Asia-Pacific region. The major New Zealand textbooks in both HRM and Employment Relations have been produced by AUT staff. AUT is also the home of the main New Zealand academic and professional journal in this area, the New Zealand Journal of Employment Relations.
People and employment is an integrated programme because it combines the perspectives of HRM in the organisation with a wider employment relations focus on actors beyond the firm, such as government and trade unions. In the modern environment, managers require both these skills.
The people and employment specialisation offers the skills to analyse and successfully develop the processes involved in managing people, as well as specific expertise in key areas such as occupational health and safety, training and development, and gender and diversity. The international emphasis in the core papers is also valuable because of the growing number of businesses operating in the global environment.
RESEARCH
Staff in HRM and employment relations, based in the Management Department, are research-active members of the Business School. They form the core group within the New Zealand Work and Labour Market Institute. This links them with other staff in labour economics and law, and is the hub for a national network of university experts and practitioners in HRM and Employment Relations.
Our staff also enjoy close links with major stakeholders such as the Department of Labour, Business NZ and the Council of Trade Unions, as well as with international universities. Through these links, students benefit from practitioner and global experiences, and the teaching programme is strongly informed by the research activities of staff. Research students also have exciting opportunities to join research projects with staff, practitioners and international experts.
