Bachelor of Design: degree outline

Design is everywhere – and its importance cannot be understated. Design leads people, companies and futures forward through telling stories, informing, entertaining or doing business.

The Bachelor of Design (BDes) helps you bring your creative ideas to fruition in the commercial world through highly creative and practical programmes. You learn how to think laterally, develop creative ideas and critically evaluate your own work, and the work of other practitioners.

  • Self-directed, self-reflective learning that develops your problem-solving skills within a particular specialist discipline in art and design
  • Develop the ability to assess and effectively use relevant technologies in the development of solutions
  • Strong input from industry partners and advisers including Weta Workshop, Flux Animation Studio, TV3, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland Council, Creative New Zealand, and Kate Sylvester
  • Opportunity to undertake research in the areas of graphic design, spatial design, fashion and visual arts, or in areas in which these disciplines integrate or converge
  • At the end of Year 3, you have the opportunity to exhibit your work to media and industry through the AUT School of Art and Design festival

Structure

The degree is undertaken over three years, with increasing specialisation in your chosen major.

Year 1

You undertake core studies in Design Studio and Theory. All first year students must take 3 core first year papers: Core Studio Art and Design, Core Theory Art and Design and Creative Process. You also choose elective papers that introduce the 6 majors.

Year 2
You will build on the conceptual foundations of Year 1 and follow your major pathway. You will develop specific technical knowledge and skills in a context of understanding design processes and theories.

Year 3
You specialise further in your major and develop specific research-based projects. The degree is structured to emphasise creative development in the early stages and then to bring this creativity into a more professional context.
