Admission to Undergraduate Degrees

This page has information on what you need to have for University Entrance (UE). University Entrance is the minimum requirement for admission to bachelors degrees at AUT University.
There are 4 ways to gain University Entrance:
  • New Zealand Secondary School Qualifications
  • Special Admission
  • Discretionary Entrance
  • Ad Eundem Statum Admission (includes CIE and International Baccalauerate)

You may also have to meet additional requirements and selection criteria to get into a bachelors degree

New Zealand Secondary School Qualifications – apply if you have 1 of the following:

NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) with:

  • A minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, including a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 or higher in each of two subjects from an approved list of subjects, with a further 14 credits at Level 3 or higher taken from no more than two additional domains on the National Qualifications Framework or approved subjects; and
  • A minimum of 14 credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pāngarau on the National Qualifications Framework; and
  • A minimum of 8 credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Māori; 4 credits must be in Reading and 4 credits must be in Writing (literacy credits will be selected from approved achievement standards and unit standards)

Changes to NCEA - you need to meet higher minimum UE requirements from 2014

Higher School Certificate with:

  • A grade of C or higher in each of three subjects of the New Zealand University Entrance, Bursaries and Scholarships (NZUEBS) examinations; or
  • A combination of NZUEBS A, B or C grades and have completed equivalent subjects registered on the National Qualifications Framework; or
  • At least 13 credits at Level 3 from the National Qualifications Framework in each of 3 approved subjects from the approved list

New Zealand Bursaries – apply if you:

  • Have a New Zealand Bursary at ‘A’ or ‘B’ level; or
  • Have a grade of D or higher in each of 4 subjects of the New Zealand Universities Bursaries Examination prior to 1993

New Zealand University Entrance – apply if you:

  • Have New Zealand Bursary Entrance prior to 1986

Special Admission – apply if you:

  • Are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident; and
  • Don’t have a University Entrance qualification; and
  • Are 20 years or over by the first day of semester in which the programme begins

If you are under the age of 20 but meet the other requirements above, you may in exceptional cases apply for Special Admission. When assessing your application, the primary focus will be on your level of preparedness for university study.

Discretionary Entrance – apply if you:

  • Are under the age of 20 years; and
  • Are a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia; and
  • Don’t  meet the University Entrance standard; and
  • Have received secondary schooling to at least New Zealand Year 12 level (or its equivalent overseas) and completed 4 subjects* at NCEA Level 2, each with a minimum of 14 credits; and
  • Meet the UE literacy and numeracy standards, or their equivalents; and
  • Have not completed Year 13 at a New Zealand secondary school; or
  • Have undertaken study in Year 13 at a New Zealand secondary school, but not attempted to qualify for University Entrance

Please note: There is a non-refundable assessment fee.

Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must also be selected into the programme for which they have applied.

Australian applicants’ most recent schooling must have been in New Zealand.

*At least 3 of the subjects need to be from the approved subject list, and only 1 can combine credits from up to 2 approved subjects or domains.Back to top

Ad Eundem Statum Admission (admission at entrance level) – apply if you have 1 of the following:

  • CIE (University of Cambridge International Examination)
  • IB (International Baccalaureate)
  • An approved qualification from a special character New Zealand secondary school, including Accelerated Christian Education Year 13 Academic Certificate (with at least 4 credits in subjects designated Year 13) or Steiner School Certificate (SSC) Level 3
  • Completed Year 13 secondary school overseas (New Zealand applicants only)
  • An Australian high school ranking with an ATAR rank of 69.5 or above or an OP rank of 14 or below
  • An appropriate qualification from an overseas secondary school or tertiary institution, deemed by AUT University to be sufficient for admission into a bachelors programme
  • An approved Foundation Studies qualification
  • An approved course of study at Level 3 or above from AUT University
  • An appropriate course of study at Level 3 or above (or equivalent) from a recognised New Zealand tertiary provider, normally including either 120 points at Level 3 or 60 points at Level 4 or above

CIE – apply if you have:

  • General: 120 points or above on the UCAS Tariff at A or AS level from an approved list (equivalent to NCEA approved subject list) and a grade of D or above in at least 3 different syllabus groups (excluding Thinking Skills)
  • Numeracy: D or above in IGCSE Mathematics
  • Literacy: E or above in AS English Language or AS English Literature

If you have completed CIE in a country other than the United Kingdom or New Zealand, you must:

  • Have achieved at least 3 A level results with at least 1 grade at level C or above from an approved list (equivalent to NCEA approved subject list); and
  • Meet the numeracy and literacy requirements for admission at entrance level – a result in General Studies will not be accepted

International Baccalaureate (IB) – apply if you have:

  • Been awarded the IB Diploma (24 points minimum); and
  • Satisfied literacy and numeracy requirements by successfully completing English as language (IB Group 1) and any mathematics subject (IB Group 5)

Year 13 of secondary school overseas (New Zealand applicants only) – apply if you have:

  • Achieved at least 72 credits at NCEA Level 2 or higher, including a minimum of 14 credits in each of two approved subjects; and
  • Achieved a further 14 credits at Level 2 or above from one domain or approved subjects; and
  • Satisfied the literacy and numeracy requirements for entrance from NCEA; and
  • Provide evidence of having studied overseas at an appropriate level (comparable to New Zealand Year 13) for no less than 20 weeks
