"An empty shell like the empty nest, invites daydreams of refuge" - Gaston Bachelard
The phenomenon known as 'chinese whispers' is often referred to as a metaphor for cumulative error, highlighting the inaccuracies and unreliability of human recollection. Any form of human communication that passes from one group or individual to another, contains the element of the original, along with the personal interpretation imposed by the recipient or communicator. This show will explore the individual interpretations within a group, communicating their distinctive understanding of this phrase by Bachelard.
Utilising the phrase as a common starting point, we will investigate the idea that each individual will contribute something of themselves to their understanding of the initial expression. Preconceived ideas and interpretations of the phrase will alter the dialogue and dynamic of the original. The recipient’s history and experiences will inevitably determine how that communication is received, interpreted and passed on.
The works in this show will explore the inaccuracies resulting from distinct and separate understandings of the expression. Four artists, four individual interpretations and approaches to an exploration connected by the thread of the phrase.
