Phil Dadson is well known as an intermedia/sound artist & founder of New Zealand's most original rhythm/performance group, From Scratch. Following membership of the foundation group for Scratch Orchestra (London 1969), he founded Scratch Orchestra (NZ), and later From Scratch (1974), known internationally for it’s funky rhythms & intermedia performances on original instruments. His solo performances and exhibitions include sound & intermedia performances & installations, music compositions, graphic scores, video & short film, sound sculptures, and improvisations on his instruments. He was a co- founder of Alternative Cinema, SoundWatch, and founder of the Elam Intermedia department and Auckland’s first video/intermedia festival, 'Interdigitate’.


Phil Dadson is one of the finalists for the Walters Prize. The exhibition will be held from September 2 through November 17 at the Auckland City Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki.

The exhibition at St Paul St gallery includes early works like Earthworks (1971) and Breath (1975) and more recent films like Uncharted Crossing (1989/2005) and Aerial Farm from his Polar Projects (2004).
