Ecstatic banality
Violently Happy Housewives is a multi-disciplinary art exhibition by four young female artists. They speak through dance, film, craftwork and fine art, in the language of 3rd wave feminism. “It is the opposite of angry – intellectual yet tasty, banal but still sexy,” states multimedia artist / curator Cellulite Rose.
The relationship between art and context intrigues Cellulite Rose. She has previously broadened her audience to include uninitiated art viewers through street performance and installations in unconventional venues such as The White House Strip Club.
For Violently Happy Housewives her agenda is “to superimpose a surreal series of private, domestic situations into an official art-viewing context - the clean, formal gallery.” From diverse backgrounds of formal training and practice in a variety of mediums the four artists approach a shared conceptual and contextual spectrum.
Alexa Wilson is an Interdisciplinary Choreographer with a BA in Women’s Studies and Film, T.V and Media Studies. Amy McDonald is a conceptual craft-artist with a BA in History and Women Studies. Ruby Mitchell is a Fine Arts / English graduate. Cellulite Rose, a multimedia artist and Fine Arts graduate, curates the Violently Happy Housewives exhibition.
