Outdoor Projection

St. Paul St. is proud to welcome Hye Rim Lee’s BOOM BOOM: super heroine super beauty, 2004 as the first work on our giant outdoor projection wall at 34 St. Paul Street. The 14 x 10 metre concrete projection screen is mounted on the front of the new School of Art and Design building. During 2005 a series of one-off screenings and moving image-based seasons profiling adventurous and challenging art works and design projects produced in New Zealand and internationally will occupy this site.

BOOM BOOM: super heroine super beautyis a part of an ongoing series of Auckland-based Korean artist Hye Rim Lee’s TOKI/Cyborg project, in this incarnation focusing on capturing the animation process of constructing four perfect/desirable parts of TOKI’s body. The character’s emergence as a fully formed cyborg is charted: the formation of her delicate high-heeled feet, her perky breasts, the plastic perfection of her face. Lee has said of her practice ‘I want to explore fun, dream, fantasy and popular culture. My work will be designed to evoke multi-sensory sensation.’

Hye Rim Lee has been working with the character TOKI since her third year at Elam School of Fine Arts. Since then TOKI has evolved from a live actor with a rabbit head-dress, to a plastic figurine, to a 3D animated character. The project explores the domains of psychoanalysis, classicism, Asian manga/anime, cinema, music, politics, ethnology, mathematics, technology, plastic surgery, genetics, cybernetics, cultural studies, feminism, eroticism, aesthetics and taps into a wider dialogue about the relationship between technology and humankind.
