About the Gallery

ST PAUL ST, the galleries of AUT, were established in 2004 and over the past four years have developed a strong programme, which has made them one of the leading university galleries in New Zealand and a first and foremost trio of galleries for contemporary art and design in Auckland.

With a high curatorial profile and a blend of different exhibition schemes - ranging from one-night-shows to major group and solo exhibitions (the majority held over the duration of several weeks), from students and staff projects to exhibitions which showcase internationally renowned artists - the galleries offer a perfect opportunity for students, the arts community and the larger public to get in touch and become familiar with the diversity of strands and currents in contemporary art and design practice. Lectures and talks by visiting artists and scholars, workshops by photographers, architects, designers and other practitioners complete the profile.

The three different locations – the two galleries at ST PAUL ST and Gallery Three on Symonds Street – are endued with three different spaces, which suit a multitude of requirements and are able to accommodate exhibitions of various sizes and styles.

Parallel to a curated programme of 6-8 week long exhibitions in Gallery One and Two, ST PAUL ST runs shorter projects drawing on the School of Art and Design student and staff research interests including MA Thesis presentations, curatorial projects, screenings and performances.

ST PAUL ST is staffed by a full-time Director/Curator Dr Leonhard Emmerling, Catherine Garet: Assistant Director, Dr Melissa Laing: Gallery Assistant, Alan Joy: Gallery Assistant and Guy Nicoll: Technical Director.
