Joining an arts community
Elliot Collins Bachelor of Visual Arts, Master of Art and Design
After completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts Elliot Collins started managing an Auckland art gallery as well as making and exhibiting his own work in galleries around town. He values the five years spent studying with other students and teachers and the relationships built over that time. “I miss not having people in the studio and their informed conversations. You’ve known them for five years and they know what you’re about. I’m talking about other students and teachers.
A lot of barriers are broken down by that amount of time at art school together. There is a lot of honesty although it’s not always what you want to hear. Art school affords you the real freedom to be with other people. It gives you a working studio practice within a community.”

For the love of design
Livia Lima, Bachelor of Design – Digital Design
Graphic design graduate, Livia Lima, recently set up a research and strategy focused design studio with a partner. “We are called We Love because it’s about things we love to do. I’m really enjoying this because we have created systems and processes that allow us to work collaboratively with professionals all around the world. It’s a lot of fun and the results are really satisfying. “Even before I started my course I had already fallen in love with typography.
In the course I had the opportunity to work with incredible tutors who are also excellent designers. I was pushed to my limits and was able to develop my work to a really good standard, I learned a lot. The facilities at AUT are outstanding and that gave me the opportunity to explore several media technologies, which also influenced my work. “The degree and the tutors I encountered at AUT really have determined who I am today as a designer. I worked really hard and luckily enough, finding a job was never an issue. I was fortunate enough to receive a number of great job offers after university.”

Direct Experience
Jill Round Bachelor of Design – Digital Design
“I really liked the film aspect of doing the degree. I was able to work in all areas of film production from preproduction through to post-production. I have a great interest in directing and was able to gain experience through completing a number of short films throughout the degree. I was also able to learn a great deal about postproduction in the areas of compositing and visual effects, which is something I plan to pursue in the future. “A highlight of doing an honours degree was travelling to Deakin University in Melbourne with tutors to research motion capture.” A movie poster for Jill Round’s third year project a short film called Snow White Blood Red based on the Brothers Grimm tale Little Snow White. It is a fairytale retold in film noir style, live action and green-screened footage composited with 2D and 3D imagery. It is a highly stylised piece influenced by the dark films of the 1940s and ‘50s.

AUT University students are diverse. We embrace and promote this diversity in our education and teaching style.
With our industry based learning, we focus on a combination of individual development and academic learning. This formula not only helps our students learn, it promotes development even after they leave.
Our high level of diversity is also reflected in our staff. From lecturers to heads of department, we have staff that engage and relate to students, helping them to not only push themselves but the boundaries surrounding them. The AUT programme offered me invaluable skills and opened my eyes as to how valuable networking and communication are to my future success.
