Portfolio Guidelines for Art & Design Programmes at AUT

You will need to submit a portfolio of work as part of your application to study at AUT for the following undergraduate Art and Design qualifications:

Apply to AUT

https://register.aut.ac.nz/

During the application process, you will be asked to submit a portfolio. You are strongly encouraged to submit your portfolio along with your application to AUT. If, however, your portfolio is not ready to be submitted at this stage, then you can upload your portfolio through your Arion account. Please see the instructions below under how to submit your portfolio after applying to AUT.

If you do submit your portfolio at the point of application, you will need to include your full name, programme/s and major/s  you are applying for as the filename for your portfolio.

You will also need to write a cover letter to include with your portfolio; this should be the first page of your portfolio.  See below for guidelines on what to include in your cover letter.

We will be unable to review portfolios that do not have a name or programme/major recorded.

Deadlines for programme application and portfolio submission

Applications for admission to our Undergraduate programmes, the Bachelor of Design and the Bachelor of Visual Arts, for 2017 will remain open until all places are filled. Acceptance into these programmes is based on academic achievement, the work submitted in a portfolio, and if required, an interview.

What to include in your portfolio

  • Approximately 12 to 24 A4 pages of images/photos of your work that are compatible with the Bachelor of Visual Arts or the Bachelor of Design major(s) that you are applying for; Communication Design, Digital Design, Fashion Design, Product Design, Spatial Design or Textile Design
  • Give a short explanation of each image including the date, title and the issue or concept that you were working on and your role if it is a collaborative piece.
  • Include the working drawings or process, where available, for at least one piece of work or project.
  • A short cover letter that outlines your background and achievements.  Include this letter as the first page of your portfolio.

It is a requirement to provide a cover letter outlining the following:

  • Introducing yourself
  • Design aspirations or goals
  • Past or present design studies

Please note:

  • Ensure that your portfolio demonstrates both a breadth and depth of creative work, i.e. you should include images of a range of drawings, sketches, models and finished examples of work in your portfolio.
  • Submit only one portfolio, regardless of how many programmes or majors that you apply for. All the art and design programmes or majors that you apply for will review this portfolio.

You will be unable to re-submit or update your portfolio once it has been received by AUT.

Do not include:
  • Original work - instead, send us photos or electronic copies of your work in your portfolio. You can always bring original work with you should an interview be required.

The following links contain examples of strong portfolios. Although these are directed at specific majors, the general format and content are acceptable across most programmes. Take some time to look through these portfolios to start thinking about what you may include in yours – remember these are guidelines only so what you include and how you present your images is entirely up to you. Just remember to keep to the basic guidelines for portfolio submission as outlined here.

Portfolio format

Approximately 12-24 A4 pages of images/photos of your work and a cover letter merged into one pdf file.  For example a file created in Powerpoint or NDesign or Word is then converted into one pdf file.

If you are applying for majors such as Digital and Communication Design, you may wish to send us a movie file as your portfolio. Please DO NOT upload movie or audio files with your application or to your Arion account. If you do wish to submit a movie file then we recommend you upload your movie to YouTube, and place a link to this in your cover letter.

If for any reason you have a problem uploading your portfolio (ie due to file size limitations) please email the PDF portfolio to admission.documents@aut.ac.nz. The file size MUST NOT EXCEED 30MB. Any files exceeding 30MB will be sent back to you by Admissions and/or not uploaded to your application. Applications that do not include a portfolio will not be assessed.

How to submit your portfolio after applying to AUT

If you are not ready to submit your portfolio with your application to AUT, then you can upload your portfolio through your Arion account at a later date. Please note that your application will not be assessed until we have received your portfolio. Therefore we do recommend that you submit your portfolio through the online application process as detailed above.

Your portfolio must be submitted in a single file by electronic pdf format.

  • The pdf can contain approximately 12-24 pages of images/photos of your work and a cover letter. The letter should  be the first page of your PDF portfolio.
  • Clearly include in your cover letter your name, student ID (if known), contact phone number and the name of the qualification(s) and/or major(s) that you are applying for.

If for any reason you have a problem uploading your portfolio (ie due to file size limitations) please email the PDF portfolio to admission.documents@aut.ac.nz. The file size must not exceed 20MB. Any files exceeding 20MB will be sent back to you by Admissions and/or not uploaded to your application. Applications that do not include a portfolio will not be assessed.
