During the application process, you will be asked to submit a portfolio. You are strongly encouraged to submit your portfolio along with your application to AUT. If, however, your portfolio is not ready to be submitted at this stage, then you can upload your portfolio through your Arion account. Please see the instructions below under how to submit your portfolio after applying to AUT.
If you do submit your portfolio at the point of application, you will need to include your full name, programme/s and major/s you are applying for as the filename for your portfolio.
You will also need to write a cover letter to include with your portfolio; this should be the first page of your portfolio. See below for guidelines on what to include in your cover letter.
We will be unable to review portfolios that do not have a name or programme/major recorded.
Applications for admission to our Undergraduate programmes, the Bachelor of Design and the Bachelor of Visual Arts, for 2018 is Friday 29 September. Completed applications (including portfolio) submitted by this time will have priority. Acceptance into these programmes is based on academic achievement, the work submitted in a portfolio, and if required, an interview.
It is a requirement to provide a cover letter outlining the following:
You will be unable to re-submit or update your portfolio once it has been received by AUT.
The following links contain examples of strong portfolios. Although these are directed at specific majors, the general format and content are acceptable across most programmes. Take some time to look through these portfolios to start thinking about what you may include in yours – remember these are guidelines only so what you include and how you present your images is entirely up to you. Just remember to keep to the basic guidelines for portfolio submission as outlined here.

Approximately 12-24 A4 pages of images/photos of your work and a cover letter merged into one pdf file. For example a file created in Powerpoint or NDesign or Word is then converted into one pdf file.
If you are applying for majors such as Digital and Communication Design, you may wish to send us a movie file as part of your portfolio. Please DO NOT upload movie or audio files with your application or to your Arion account. If you do wish to submit a movie file then we recommend you upload your movie to YouTube or Vimeo, etc., and place a link to this in your cover letter.
If for any reason you have a problem uploading your portfolio (ie due to file size limitations) please email the PDF portfolio to firstname.lastname@example.org. The file size MUST NOT EXCEED 30MB. Any files exceeding 30MB will be sent back to you by Admissions and/or not uploaded to your application. Applications that do not include a portfolio will not be assessed.
If you are not ready to submit your portfolio with your application to AUT, then you can upload your portfolio through your Arion account at a later date. Please note that your application will not be assessed until we have received your portfolio. Therefore we do recommend that you submit your portfolio through the online application process as detailed above.
Your portfolio must be submitted in a single file by electronic pdf format.
