The School of Art and Design has a range of facilities to enhance your study experience and university life.

ST PAUL St Gallery

ST PAUL St is a suite of purpose built galleries and project spaces run by the School of Art and Design, AUT. The programme of exhibitions, screenings, performances and events profiles both emerging and established artists and designers from New Zealand and internationally. Since it was established in 2004 ST PAUL St Gallery has developed a strong programme, which has seen the Gallery develop into one of the leading university galleries in New Zealand and the foremost gallery for contemporary art and design in Auckland.


Colab is a trans-disciplinary nexus for creative technologies based at AUT, developing innovative models for research, teaching, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurial practice across design, electronic arts, science and technology sectors.

Colab offers access to a range of industry partners, skill bases, facilities, venues and resources. It hosts a rolling programme of national and international touring exhibitions, conferences, symposia, site-specific, networked and online events. It also manages a network of specialist technical labs, including,

The James Wallace Arts Trust Loan Collection

The Wallace Arts Trust currently has over 35 institutions borrowing more than 1,000 works from its 5,500 plus collection. AUT has 245 artworks that reflect the culturally and artistically rich nature of the Collection on loan. Included are artworks by a range of high profile, established and emerging New Zealand artists including Toss Wollaston, Ian Scott, Philip Trusttum, Paratene Matchitt, Judy Millar, Bill Hammond, Robert Ellis and others. The artworks are on display in buildings across three campuses and can be viewed in the Learning Centre, the Office of the Vice Chancellor and the Business and Law School on the City Campus, in Healthcare Practice, Health and Environmental Sciences, the Library and in Education on the North Shore Campus, and in MB, MC and MD Buildings on the South Campus.

Textile Design Lab

The Textile and Design Lab (TDL) is a research and development centre at the Auckland University of Technology engaged with design and innovation through new fashion and textile technologies for the purposes of research, product development, training and education. A key objective of the TDL is to build capability and contribute to the development and value creation within the NZ design and textile industries. Another aim is knowledge sharing which is achieved through hosting workshops, short courses, master classes, symposia and conferences. The lab has invested in computer aided design systems, digital textile and garment printing, WholeGarment® and intarsia knitting machinery. 

We work with a range of industry partners and organisations utilising our design and technical expertise. Access to the TDL is available to anyone wishing to carry out research and/or product development in the apparel and textile fields. Students from both AUT and other tertiary institutes are welcome to access our facilities to produce their collections, for exhibitions and projects. Researchers and research-led companies are actively encouraged to engage with the lab and push the boundaries of the lab's technologies and expertise in their quest for innovation and knowledge. Designers and commercial businesses are also welcome to work with us on the design and development of new products, prototyping, sampling and small-scale production.

3D Printing Lab

The 3D Printing Lab is a centre for Rapid Prototyping or 3D printing.

3D printing supports the quick production of complex three-dimensional prototypes and on-demand manufacturing. This allows product concepts to be rapidly tested and ideas to be trialled before committing major costs to going into production. It also supports faster iterations of the product development process before a design is finalized.

The 3D Printing Lab works with students, staff and industry on a range of 3D printing applications and projects. Staff associated with the Lab are also researching new additive manufacturing technologies and developing methods to make most effective use of the available technologies to produce complete product prototypes in very short times.

Bindery Workshop

The book bindery is located in the creative hub of the seventh floor in WE building. The facility is well equipped to make a vast variety of books, boxes, folders and other constructions using an array of materials.

The equipment and the processes of bookbinding are old but effective. Being in the heart of the Art and Design school, this craft can be brought into the new age, with design aesthetics that are able to be applied to old world technologies.

Equipment: presses, electric guillotine, hand guillotines, board chopper, perfect binding frame, foiling machines, paper drill press, hand tools and more.

Motion Capture Lab

The Motion Capture Lab is a new facility for research, development and teaching using high-end motion capture technologies.

The Motion Analysis system is used to support capture across a number of different areas including animation, gaming, ergonomic analysis, performance analysis, virtual production and cinematography, dance, virtual engineering systems and interactive arts.

Printmaking Specialist Facility

The printmaking workshops are professional shared working spaces designed to support students working across a broad range of media disciplines.

Workshop usage: Screen Printing, Relief Printing, Intaglio/etching, Letter press, Lithography

Philosophy: Non-toxic printmaking: Use of water-based printing inks (where possible); reduction in the usage of chemicals and cleaning products to minimise the harmful effect on individuals and on the environment.

Photographic Facilities

The photographic facilities on Level 7 of E Block, ST PAUL St encompass three distinct photographic areas:

  • Digital Printing Suite: WE 719 is equipped with Epson wide format digital printers up to110mm, two flat bed A4 scanners. The Imacon scanner for scanning medium format negatives.
  • Analogue Darkrooms: WE 721 & 722 are equipped with photographic enlargers capable of handling 35mm, 6x9cm and 4x5” negatives. Black and white film processing and printing facilities. RA4 colour printer for large analogue colour prints

Photographic Lighting Studios

The studios are equipped with the latest photographic specialist lighting equipment at a professional standard.

Loans Central

Loans Central is a place where Art and Design students can borrow equipment to use for their work. We have a great collection of Digital Cameras, Video Cameras, Wacom Tablets, Televisions, DVD Players, Audio and Lighting Equipment and a range of other stuff for students to use free of charge. Postgraduate studios

The Art and Design Postgraduate Studies Department is housed within WM building on St Paul St, in the centre of Auckland City. Our students enjoy access to their studio spaces, digital labs, and moving image lab. Tutorials, presentations and critiques take place in the PG studios during the year.


The Library works closely with academic staff and researchers and postgraduates to support the learning, teaching and research objectives of the university.
