Applications

  1. How much is the application fee?
    There is no application fee. However, there is an enrolment fee of $150.

  2. How do I contact AUT to check the status of my application?
    Please email int.app@aut.ac.nz and tell us:

    • Your family name
    • Your first name
    • Date of birth
    • ID number
    • Programme applied for
    • The approximate date you sent in your application

    Make sure you have provided a current address and email details so that information is being sent to you at the correct address.

  3. How long do applications take to be processed?
    Undergraduate applications take approximately one week to be assessed once you receive an acknowledgement from AUT. Postgraduate applications take four to six weeks to be assessed.

  4. Can I fax my application to AUT or apply online?
    Yes, but faxed or electronic applications are only accepted through registered agents.

  5. Where can I get an application form?

  6. When are the deadlines for applying as an international student?
    You can apply right up until the programme closes or the semester starts. However, allow two to four weeks to process the application and 10 weeks to apply for your student visa. Please note some programmes have limited entry numbers so early applications may be necessary. Please click here for more information on deadlines.

  7. Should I send my original documents to AUT?
    Original documents should not be sent to the Registry Services as they will not be returned. All documents must be certified photocopies of the original. If you apply via an AUT approved education consultant, they are authorised to verify your academic documents.

  8. Will you let me know when you receive my application?
    Yes. We will send an acknowledgement by email or post when we receive your application.

  9. I’m waiting for my final results/IELTS, can I still submit my application?
    Yes, you can submit your application to us. However, it is your responsibility to ensure you complete your application by submitting the rest of your documents as soon as possible.

  10. Is it possible to defer study?
    International students can defer, or delay, their application only on a full offer of place not a conditional letter. Deferrals can only be made for the consecutive semester or year. To defer your study email: int.app@aut.ac.nz

  11. Can I cross-credit for studies completed elsewhere?
    Cross-credits are possible but it must be assessed and approved. Contact int.app@aut.ac.nz for more information. Cross Credit Form here.

  12. How will AUT contact me?
    We prefer to contact you via email, so make sure you include an email address in any correspondence and application.

  13. Can I get a Conditional Letter?
    AUT will issue a Conditional Letter ONLY for students when some entry requirements are not met.Back to top

English

  1. I don’t have an IELTS or a TOEFL score, can I still apply to AUT?
    Students whose first language is not English must have either an IELTS or TOEFL score in order to apply to AUT. Application without an IELTS or TOEFL will be considered incomplete.

  2. Can I study English first at AUT?
    Yes. For students who do not meet the entry requirements, the School of Languages in the Faculty of Applied Humanities offers three English for Academic Study preparation programmes. These offer students a solid background in the language skills, research processes and critical thinking required for academic study in a New Zealand University.

    The programmes are:

    • Diploma in English Language
    • Certificate in English for Academic Study
    • Certificate in Introduction to English for Academic Study

    Students who do not meet the English entry requirements can also enrol in one of the English programmes taught through International House.

  3. What is an IELTS and how do I take the exam?
    IELTS examinations test the English proficiency of students in the area of their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. They offer tests in both general and academic English. AUT only accepts the academic English test results. Please visit http://www.ielts.org/ to find an IELTS centre close to you.

  4. What is a TOEFL and how do I take the exam?
    TOEFL test measures English language proficiency in reading, listening and writing and is offered in most regions of the world. Please visit the TOEFL website to find a testing centre close to you. AUT’s institution code for TOEFL is 7008.

General

  1. Do you have a fall and spring semester?
    AUT has intakes in March and July. The one exception to this is the School of Business – MBA, which has 6 intakes (January, March, May, June, August and October).

  2. Can I study part-time at AUT?
    No. All international students have to study full time to meet the requirement of their student permit with the Immigration New Zealand. However, a student on a NZ work permit is allowed to take a paper at AUT part time, as long as they apply for a variation of conditions on their work permit with Immigration New Zealand.

  3. Does AUT offer short courses?
    Yes, AUT does offer short courses for international students. Students studying a short course at AUT cannot obtain a student permit for the short course. Students undertaking a short course will need to ensure they have a valid visa to stay in New Zealand for their period of study.

  4. Does AUT offer an internship?
    For information about interning in New Zealand, please visit http://www.internshipnz.com/.

  5. Can I study in New Zealand for only one or two semesters?
    Yes, if that is the length of the programme.

  6. Does AUT have a foundation programme?
    Yes, AUT has foundation programmes that are offered by Norton College and Taylors College

  7. What campus will I study at?
    Most of the programmes in the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences and the School of Education are held at the North Shore campus. All other programmes are taught at the City Campus.

  8. Can I work part time?
    Yes, students attending a course at AUT can work no longer than 20 hours a week, and can work full time during holiday periods. Please note that students will not be able to fund themselves by working part time.

  9. Where is the International Centre?
    The International Centre is on the corner of St Paul and Wakefield Street, 56 Wakefield Street, Auckland city.

  10. Do I need insurance?
    ACCIDENT INSURANCE: The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at http://www.acc.co.nz/.

    MEDICAL AND TRAVEL INSURANCE: International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.

    It is a requirement for all international students studying at AUT to have comprehensive medical and travel insurance cover. Students can either have the cover arranged by AUT or produce evidence at the time of application that they have insurance cover from another company that meets the approval of AUT.

  13. Why should I have an ID card?
    An AUT student ID card gives students access to :

    - Borrowing facilities in the AUT Library
    - Use of photocopiers
    - Access to Computer Facilities
    - Student discounts when used in conjunction with the AuSM discount booklet
    - Proof of enrolment and access to class
    - Entry to examinations

  14. Does AUT have Course counsellors?
    The International Centre is available for course counselling sessions from Monday to Friday between the hours of 10am – 4pm. 

  15. Can AUT help me find work when I’ve graduated?
    No. But AUT offers regular career fairs where employers can meet with students who will soon graduate. The Student Job Service located on campus also has a current listing of positions available both for student jobs and graduate positions. There is also a Careers Centre located in Student Services which helps students to male informed career decisions about how they might use their qualifications and abilities to achieve their career goals.   16. Does AUT offer conjoint programmes?
    AUT does offer conjoint programmes. The following programmes are offered as conjoint: Bachelor of Arts & Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Business & Bachelor of Computer & Information Sciences, Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences & Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Business & Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Health Science and Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences and Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Sport and Recreation and Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of International Hospitality Management. International students can only apply for a conjoint degree after one year of study in any one of the above programmes.Back to top

  4. Do fees increase every year?
    The International fee is subject to change. For this year’s fees, please click here.

  5. Can I get a refund if I don’t get a visa?
    A full refund of fees will be issued in the event of a student failing to obtain a student permit/visa or in the event a student’s application for an extension to their visa/permit is refused by the Immigration NZ. Please see refund policy for more information.

  6. When do I need to pay my fees by?
    Fees should be paid by the payment deadline written on the offer of place but some late payments are accepted.Back to top

Postgraduate

  1. If I don’t meet the entry requirements for a postgraduate programme, are there any alternatives available to me?
    Yes, AUT has postgraduate foundation programmes to prepare graduates for postgraduate study.

  2. Does AUT offer an MBA?
    Yes, AUT offers an MBA programme that is available for international students. For more information please visit www.autmba.info.

Accommodation and Arrival in New Zealand

  1. Where do I shop for textbooks?
    Textbooks are available through the Bennetts bookstore on campus.

  2. Where can I stay if I decide to take the offer at AUT?
    There are a variety of accommodation options. Look at the Accommodation section of the website for more information.

  3. Does AUT offer home stay accommodation?
    Yes, Homestay accommodation can be arranged through AUT. Look at the Accommodation section of the website for more information.

  4. Where do I find details about orientation?
    All new International students starting study at AUT University are required to attend International Orientation. 
    Further information can be found here.

  5. Where do I go on my first day when I arrive?
    Please visit the International Student Support Centre on your first day so we can direct you to the orientation or to your classes if you have missed orientation. They are located at 49 St. Paul Street on the corner of Wakefield Street.

  6. How do I get my timetable?
    You will be given your timetable at orientation. Timetables can be obtained from the individual faculty programme administrators, please visit the International student centre to be directed to the right person.Back to top

Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students

Code: AUT has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Ministry of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from the Institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international.
