Master of Business student
Graduate Diploma in Business

Being able to learn in an interactive environment that makes it easy to make friends is what Sanhchivorn Tha enjoys most about studying business at AUT.

“The classes make it easy to interact with my lecturers and classmates. It is a friendly environment, and I enjoy studying alongside postgraduate students from many different countries and explore management topics in the contexts of those countries,” says Sanhchivorn who is enrolled in a Master of Business specialising in management.

Choosing AUT
After he completed his undergraduate degree in Cambodia, gaining international experience was the logical next step, Sanhchivorn says.

“Growing up in Phnom Penh, I was initially interested in working in the public sector and decided to study law and business administration. After working for TESCO as a commercial merchandiser, I wanted to pursue higher-level academic qualifications and started to look for opportunities overseas.

“I saw the New Zealand Aid Scholarships advertised, and started exploring studying in New Zealand. Auckland looked like a vibrant city, and AUT stood out for offering management subjects that matched my interests. When I graduate and return home to Cambodia, I would like to progress my career in a management consulting company.”

New Zealand is a beautiful country, says Sanhchivorn who is on a New Zealand ASEAN Scholarship, and he takes every opportunity to experience it from north to south.

Advice for other students
His advice for other students is to be open-minded and talk to people.

“I have enjoyed meeting and talking to Kiwis and other international students. My tip for new students is to go to class early and start talking to people.

“To travel to a new country away from friends and family is a big step but I have always been supported by many different departments at AUT. The lecturers are very approachable, the Scholarships Office gave me a warm welcome when I arrived at AUT and continuous support, and the Student Learning team has given me many tips to enhance my study skills.”

He now feels equipped to help other Cambodian students who are new to AUT, Sanhchivorn says.
