Bachelor of International Tourism Management

Coming from the Maldives, one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, Mohamed Shenaan has first-hand experience of the tourism industry.

"I have a keen interest in tourism and travel, and I also have family involved in the tourism industry back home in the Maldives. It's an area I wanted to explore further, which is why I decided to study tourism at AUT."

After completing his undergraduate studies at AUT, Mohamed decided to continue his postgraduate research here in Auckland, focusing on marketing by marine-based tourist activity operators.

"I'm conducting research on small marine-based tourism operators in Auckland and how they use social media as a marketing tool. I chose this topic as I'm a keen social media user and believe it's become increasingly important for the marketing strategies of tourism operators."

Industry understanding
He says the Master of International Tourism Management is a great choice for those thinking of doing further study in the field of tourism management.

"I would definitely recommend this programme – it's only one and a half years long, the modules are interesting, and the lecturers are very accessible and experienced."

Getting in front of established tourism operators will also aid his understanding of the market.

"During my research I will be in contact with several tourism operators and it will provide me with an in-depth knowledge of the industry," he says.

A great environment for postgraduate study
The friendly staff and up-to-date technology make AUT a great place for postgraduate study, says Mohamed who came to AUT as an international student.

"Throughout my studies, I've had the encouragement of very receptive and helpful lecturers. The facilities and resources available to tourism students at AUT are modern and easily accessible. I also love living in Auckland and the New Zealand lifestyle."

A highlight for Mohamed was being awarded the Travel Agents' Association of New Zealand Award for Academic Excellence, which has assisted him in continuing his research.
