Dhruv Mohan

2nd-year student, Diploma in Culinary Arts

The high calibre of the hospitality staff is what attracted him to AUT, says Dhruv Mohan who is currently completing a Diploma in Culinary Arts.

“I chose AUT because it has some of the best kitchens, equipment and chef lecturers. The lecturers have diverse backgrounds and experiences, which they readily share with students.

“Hospitality is a people industry. People make the difference and for me the top reason to study at AUT is the calibre of the lecturers,” says Dhruv who worked as a professional chef for three years before deciding he wanted a more structural approach to master all the areas of the professional kitchen.

Embracing students’ passion for food
He enjoys spending his days working with and studying food, Dhruv says.

“All papers have provided me with knowledge and skills that are applicable to the real world and will further my career objectives. I’ve also had tons of practical experience and that’s great. I’ve learnt not only how to cook dishes but to master the basic techniques, which makes learning more dishes even easier.”

Returning to study wasn’t always without challenges, he admits.

“The biggest challenge for me was to get back to study after spending a considerable time working. Thanks to the various workshops offered in the library – especially the one on academic writing – I was able to avoid frustration and get guidance.”

Creating career-ready graduates
He would highly recommend AUT, says Dhruv.

“No matter what type of food is your passion, here at AUT it will be embraced and appreciated. Instead of learning many things just once, you’ll be exposed to a structure that gives you lots of opportunities to master them.”

The diverse learning environment has been a highlight of his studies, says Dhruv who came to AUT as an international student from India.

“In my opinion, AUT is the university of the changing world because it offers opportunities and courses that promote the blending of cultures and people from various groups to succeed. This prepares students to do the same in the workplace, which is vital to success because every day the world is becoming a bigger melting pot of cultures.”
