Elective Classes

Most students choose to study in a full-time English programme. A range of non-academic elective classes is available to students studying full-time, depending on their language level and area of interest.

General English

Level: All levels from Beginner to Advanced

Length: Minimum 2 weeks

Course Description:

  • Topic-based
  • Develops vocabulary and grammar
  • Develops confidence in using language
  • Focus on all 4 skills
  • Group and pair work, focus on communication
  • Range of supplementary materials

 

Writing

Level: Pre-Intermediate or higher

Length: 1 – 4 months

Course Description:

  • Focuses on writing problems associated with English sounds and spelling
  • Focuses on improving handwriting
  • Focuses on a range of genres including letters, essays and narratives
  • Strong one to one attention from teachers


Reading

Level:Intermediate 1 or higher

Length:1 month

Course Description:

  • Develops reading skills and strategies
  • Builds vocabulary
  • Develops critical thinking skills
  • Improves reading speed


Speaking

Level: Intermediate 1 or higher

Length:1 month

Course Description:

  • Focuses on improving oral fluency
  • Focuses on aspects of pronunciation
  • Materials look at a range of topics


Pronunciation

Level: Intermediate 1 or higher

Length:1 month

Course Description:

  • Focuses on individual sounds
  • Focuses on word and sentence stress and intonation
  • Focuses on pausing and linking
  • Improves oral fluency


Business English

Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Length:1 - 3 months

Course Description:

  • Language and skills for international business communication
  • Topics include business correspondence, CV writing, management styles and business communication
  • BEC exam preparation available in Business Levels 3 and 4


IELTS

Level: Completion of one month of Intermediate 2 or an acceptable

level on the AUT IH placement test.

Length:1 – 3 months

Course Description:

  • Focus on all 4 language skills
  • Introduction to IELTS test
  • Skills and strategies for IELTS test
  • Systematic study of grammar and academic vocabulary

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication)

Level:Intermediate 2 or higher

Length: Minimum one month

Course Description:

  • Exam preparation for TOEIC test
  • 5 topic areas related to TOEIC exam
  • Vocabulary development
  • Listening and reading skills development
  • Core text – additional cost of approximately $65
  • Students may enrol for TOEIC test at the AUT International House testing centre

 

New Zealand Studies

Level: Intermediate 2 or higher

Length:1 month

Course Description:

  • Focus on aspects of New Zealand customs, culture and history
  • New Zealand based authentic materials
  • Vocabulary and skills development
  • Course includes some field trips

 

IELTS/EAP (English for Academic Purposes)

Level: Completion of one month of Intermediate 3 or Intermediate

2 students who have completed the IELTS course or an acceptable

level on the AUT IH placement test.

Length:1 – 8 months

Course Description:

  • Focuses on IELTS academic module
  • Topic-based
  • Skills and strategies for IELTS academic module
  • Study of grammar and academic vocabulary for university study

 

IELTS Academic Writing

Level:Intermediate 3 or higher. Knowledge of IELTS or completion

of an IELTS class at AUT IH is recommended.

Length:1 month

Course Description:

  • Focuses on writing skills and strategies for IELTS Academic module
  • Develops academic writing skills from sentence to essay level
