Dictionary of terms and abbreviations
The following terms and abbreviations are often seen in accommodation advertisements and material:
- b/r: bedroom, e.g. 2b/r = two bedrooms
- d/w: dishwasher
- f/f: combined fridge freezer
- m/w: microwave
- o.s.p: off street parking
- rm: room
- n/s: non smoker
- m/f: male or female applicant acceptable
- d/r: dining room
- Furnished: most of the furniture you need is in the flat or house, but it is a good idea to check how good the furniture is and exactly what’s included
- Mod cons: modern conveniences - can include appliances and electronics such as a microwave oven, television, telephone and pay TV
- Neg: negotiable - usually refers to the cost of rent or terms of occupancy
- r.o.w.: right of way, refers to the access to the property, will normally indicate the property is set back from the road behind a row of houses
- a.h.: after hours (after work) - meaning that the landlord or property manager prefers to be telephoned after work hours with regard to the room or accommodation
- wk: work - normally indicates that the landlord or property manager wants to be contacted during business hours
- pw: per week - this is the amount of rent you must pay each week
- refs req: references required - the landlord or property manager wants you to show letters from other landlords or anyone else who can show that you are a person of ‘good character’
- dbl: double - refers to the size of the bedroom and means the room will hold a large bed
- sing: refers to the size of the bedroom and means that it is a small room and can hold a single bed
